This monster's name is not to be confused with the Bruiser Brothers.

The Bruisers are large cybernetic Demons found in the Resurrection of Evil and Lost Mission expansions of Doom 3.

Appearance[]

The Bruiser has a large muscular body in the vein of a Hell Knight and identical mechanical features of a Mancubus, although both creatures' robotic parts look different. The Bruiser is taller than a Mancubus, but somewhat shorter than a Hell Knight. It stands roughly 9 feet tall.

Its feet feature robotic hooves, both arms are giant fireball launchers, and the head is a sight to behold. It has two demon horns on the far back of its head, facing outward and the front has two yellow eyes with no pupils. Above the eyes are two yellow rings. The mouth is actually a large TV-screen that connects to the head with a fleshy tube. On the screen is a close up of human teeth and gums. The TV-screen also displays an eyeball upon sighting an enemy. The mouth sometimes opens and closes as the beast moves. Its back has what appears to be a visible, robotic spine. It makes distorted electronic screeches and roars.

Combat characteristics[]

Essentially a mixture between a Hell Knight and a Mancubus, the Bruiser attacks by rapidly firing alternating fireballs from its twin arm cannons which will quickly kill almost any opponent, especially at close range. They can also smack the Player with their cannons (though this attack is rarely used). Their fireballs do as much damage as the Mancubus's, but fire at a significantly faster rate. Their melee attacks are weaker and they have less health than either the Hell Knight or Mancubus.

Tactical analysis[]

Like the Mancubus, Bruisers are very slow-moving. The Player can exploit this to quickly take cover behind a wall or object, evading the Bruiser's fireballs and then firing at it when it stops. Bruisers also tend to turn their backs and walk away from the Player if they lose sight of them. The Player can take advantage of this to use the Rocket Launcher, charge the BFG, or pelt them with Grenades. The Plasma Gun can kill a Bruiser with about a full 50 shots. Shooting their TV screen heads will take them down faster, with two Super Shotgun blasts to the head being sufficient to kill it just like a Hell Knight. The Artifact's Berserker power-up can kill the Bruiser in one hit from any weapon.

In the BFG Edition, Bruisers have been modified so that shooting it in the television/mouth will cause it to flinch, much like a pain state. With fully-automatic weapons, this can stun-lock it, reducing its ability to attack.

Trivia[]

  • As seen early in Doom 3's development, the Bruiser's unique TV-mouth was intended to be another way of scaring the Player. The Player would walk up to what appeared to be a typical computer terminal, and the terminal would change and the Bruiser would reveal its entire self. This, however, was later dropped and thus does not happen in any point in the game.
