The Armor in the multiplayer mode of 2016's incarnation of DOOM is purely a cosmetic function. The player may modify the armor's categoric pieces, primary and secondary colors, light color, pattern, and wear: dirt and scratches for the armor itself, and weathering for the coloring.
The armors available are separated into 8 thematic categories: UAC, Demonic, Utilitarian, Templar, Bounty Hunter, Robotic, Cyberdemonic and Evil Cultist.
Within each category, 4 cosmetic variants exist, with variants altering the patterns and color zones of the base style, but not the armor's shape and features (such as the Jaguar variant of Wildcat). The pieces of armor customizable on the player themselves include: Helmet, Torso, Left arm, Right arm, Legs, and Base armor (an undersuit, of sorts). The pieces can be mixed and matched with other sets.
The player may also choose to use the Praetor Suit in multiplayer and SnapMap, but will not retain the use of Runes or Argent cache upgrades as used by the Doom Slayer in the campaign mode. This suit cannot be coloured differently or mixed with other armor. Player Armor in SnapMap is completely separate from Multiplayer, including the methods of acquisition.
Each individual piece of armor has either an unlock requirement, such as a challenge, or both a challenge and a level requirement. In such a case, the armor piece is acquired when either of the requirements are met.
