Name Limbo

Limbo isn´t the "inner circle of hell", it´s quite the opposite: it´s a kind of underworld immediatly before the actual hell, a place where the fair, but un-baptised souls dwell. Dante´s description of Limbo is basicly the same as the Catholic concept, he is refering to it. See Canto IV [1]:

"Obscure, profound it was, and nebulous, So that by fixing on its depths my sight Nothing whatever I discerned therein." ...

"There, as it seemed to me from listening, Were lamentations none, but only sighs, That tremble made the everlasting air."

"And this arose from sorrow without torment, Which the crowds had, that many were and great, Of infants and of women and of men."

I don´t know why they called that Doom level Limbo, it would have made more sense to give this name to the first level of the episode. --Tetz 10:56, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Apparently, this level was supposed to be the first level of the Hell episode in the original plans laid out for DOOM. I'm afraid we're left to make the best of it. I wonder why the map name was changed only for the loading screen to "Gate to Limbo." It is possible that it is supposed to be interpreted as just that - you're trapped on the side of the gate that's in Hell. 67.176.248.205 02:27, October 14, 2014 (UTC)STV
